Webb Simpson felt almost as if he had just played a round in a major after a steamy Saturday at the Colonial in Fort Worth, Texas.

For the 2012 U.S. Open champion, and pretty much everyone else at Hogan's Alley, it was a mentally draining day at the traditional tree-lined course where temperatures were in the upper 90s, with a heat index of 108 degrees and wind gusting to 25 mph.

"There is so much thinking involved on every shot," Simpson said.

Even so, Simpson shot a 3-under 67 to break out of a crowd and take the third-round lead.

At 9-under 201, Simpson was two strokes ahead of Paul Casey (68) and Danny Lee (69) after both of them made long birdie putts at the 18th hole.

Defending champion Jordan Spieth shot 68 to get to 4 under, even with caddie Michael Greller leaving the course after 11 holes because of heat exhaustion.

Singh leads Langer by 1

Vijay Singh shot a 5-under 67 to lead by one over Bernhard Langer at the Senior PGA Championship in Sterling, Va.

Singh, who began the day two strokes behind Langer, has a 54-hole total of 15-under 201. He is making his debut in the tournament.

Langer's 2-under produced his first score in the 70s this week. This is the only Champions Tour major, out of five, he has not won. He is tied with Jack Nicklaus for most senior major titles (eight).

Feng shoots 66 for lead

Shanshan Feng shot a 6-under 66 to take a one-stroke lead over Lizette Salas after the third round of the LPGA Volvik Championship in Ann Arbor, Mich. Feng's bogey-free round left her at 15 under for the tournament.
