Minnesota Drought Expands - 90s Likely Holiday Weekend

Minnesota Drought Expands - 90s Likely Holiday Weekend

You know it's going to be a long summer when 80s constitute a "cooler front". After slight relief the mercury spikes again over the weekend with low to mid 90s likely; a few towns may come close to record territory by Sunday. We cool off a bit next week with a better chance of showers and T-storms.

High Temps Expected on Monday, June 28th

Heat Waves Are Trending Hotter Over Time

A stalled storm over the Midwest will keep a few showers and T-storms in our forecast into much of next week. Heaviest rains may fall near the Iowa border (where severe drought is setting in) and models print out an inch of rain over the next week. We get a break from the heat: 70sand 80s until further notice. Check the blog for more details. -Todd Nelson

5 Day Maximum Temperature

Scorching Heat Wave Shifts to West Coast

A stalled high pressure "heat dome" will prevent cooling winds from reaching the Pacific Northwest. Seattle and Portland may see a record-smashing 105F early next week (with no A/C in most homes). A Canadian breeze keeps us in the 80s into next week with showers and T-storms Saturday PM into Tuesday. No scorching heat is expected here into next week, but some models bring a few 90s back into Minnesota after the 4th of July. Check the blog for more details. -Todd Nelson

Warm Weather Sticks Around

Warm Weather Sticks Around

Only three days in June - this past Sunday through Tuesday - registered below average highs in the metro. Now, the warmth has returned and will stick around with highs around to above average through the end of June. A few scattered storms will be around the next few days, but the heaviest rain will fall from Missouri to Michigan. - D.J. Kayser

It'll be another stunner today with blue sky and comfortable sunshine. It gets sweaty again on Wednesday as highs approach 90 degrees with sticky dewpoints. The rapid rise in heat and humidity will be responsible for another round of showers and storms late Wednesday into Thursday, some of which could be a little on the vigorous side. Soggy Father's Day - Longest Daylight Of The Year

Unfortunately, it could be a bit soggy for grilling out later today as an area of low pressure moves through the upper Midwest. Highs top off in the 70s today in the Twin Cities. Much cooler and windier weather awaits behind this system on Monday - feeling more like fall than summer! - D.J. Kayser

Great News! Soggy Father's Day Shaping Up

After the hottest start to June on record I'm happy to announce a string of 70-degree highs next week. We should end the month on a more tolerable note. June 2021 Tornado Drought. Warm & Dry Continues

Warm, dry and sunny weather will continue through midweek before rain and thunder chances return late Wednesday into Thursday. Despite a few heavier pockets of rain, it won't be the soaking we need, especially in southern Minnesota where there hasn't been a drop of rain yet this month. 80s are the New "Cool Front" - Few Thunderstorms Expected Today

80s are the New "Cool Front" - Few Thunderstorms Expected Today

It may just be a fever-dream hallucination, but my brain keeps skipping back to the heat wave and drought of 1988: 44 days above 90F in the Twin Cities that summer. It was brutal, a nationwide heat wave that crippled agriculture. Odds are it won't be nearly that bad, but the longer the heat drags on the more I'm pretty convinced that summer heat (and growing drought) will continue to be big story going forward. No sign of a change in the pattern anytime soon...
