WCHA roundup: MSU hands Michigan Tech first home loss

• MINNESOTA STATE MANKATO 6, MICHIGAN TECH 3: Jean-Paul LaFontaine had two goals and an assist and Matt Leitner also scored twice Saturday night in Houghton, Mich., as the Mavericks handed the Huskies their first home loss of the season.In a game that featured a combined 90 shots on goal by the two teams, Minnesota State owned the third period, outshooting Michigan Tech 15-9 and getting two goals from Leitner and another from Mat Knoll to end its six-game losing streak.

Minnesota State got 42 saves from Austin Lee, including 18 in the first period. Josh Robinson had 39 saves for the Huskies, who got goals from Blake Pietila, Kero and Jacob Johnstone. The Mavericks also converted on two power-play chances, while Michigan Tech went 0-for-5.

"I thought it was an even game for the most part, but taking the two quick penalties was the difference," Michigan Tech coach Mel Pearson said.

• MINNESOTA DULUTH 4, DENVER 0: Travis Oleksuk scored his eighth and ninth goals of the season, both in the second period, in leading the Bulldogs to a victory over the host Pioneers and three points out of four on the weekend.

Brady Lamb had a goal and an assist and J.T. Brown had two assists for defending national champion UMD.

Oleksuk broke a scoreless tie at 8:26 of the second period, and Jack Connolly made it 2-0 by scoring 89 seconds later.

Kenny Reiter made 29 saves for UMD.

• ST. CLOUD ST. 3, WISCONSIN 3: Justin Schultz's power-play goal with 40 seconds left tied the score for the host Badgers in Madison, Wis.

Skating with an extra attacker and on the power play, the Badgers got the tying goal from Schultz at 19:20. It was his second goal of the game and the second power-play goal by Wisconsin in the final five minutes of regulation.

Matt Paape's goal with a man-advantage at 15:41 pulled Wisconsin within 3-2.

Andre Prochno, Jared Festler and Ben Hanowski scored for the Huskies, who got 33 saves from Ryan Faragher. Joel Rumpel made 24 saves for the Badgers, who lost Friday night's game 7-2.

• COLORADO COLLEGE 5, NEBRASKA-OMAHA 2: The Tigers got three power-play goals and two empty-netters to beat the host Mavericks and earn a split in their weekend series.

The Mavericks had the game's only even-strength goal by Andrej Sustr. Ryan Walters scored shorthanded for UNO, which had a 47-27 advantage in shots on goal.

Rylan Schwartz and Dakota Eveland had empty-net goals late in the third period.

Josh Thorimbert had 45 saves, including 23 in the second period for the Tigers.

• LAKE SUPERIOR STATE 2, BEMIDJI STATE 1: Kyle Pobur's third-period goal lifted the Lakers (8-2) to a victory over the Beavers and a weekend split in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.

Pobur broke a 1-1 tie at 3:18 of the third period for the Lakers, who dropped a 3-2 overtime game to the Beavers on Friday.
