Democratic vice presidential nominee and St. Paul native Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., will be in Minnesota Tuesday as the campaign enters the stretch run, according to Teddy Tschann, a spokesman for Hillary Clinton's campaign.

Kaine, who was elected to the Senate in 2012, was also governor of Virginia and chairman of the Democratic National Committee.

Although not well known nationally, Kaine was an early favorite to be Clinton's choice, given his moderate profile and popularity in Virginia, a battleground state.

Born in St. Paul, Kaine grew up in Missouri, where he went to college before attending Harvard Law School. He took a year off law school to serve at a Jesuit mission in Honduras and speaks fluent Spanish.

As a lawyer in Richmond, Va., he specialized in civil rights and housing before becoming a city councilman, mayor of Richmond and then Virginia governor in 2005.

Additional details about Kaine's visit were not available at press time.
