Tammy Wynette came to the Twin Cities at the height of her fame in 1975. The First Lady of Country Music, as she was known, played the original Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis, belting out some of her biggest hits, such as “D-I-V-O-R-C-E,” “Your Good Girl’s Gonna Go Bad” and “Stand by Your Man.” Though she was one of the most popular and bestselling country singers of her time, she continued to renew her hairdresser’s license every year until she died in 1998 — just in case she ever had to return to her earlier occupation.
