The Vikings are now in need of a new running backs coach.
Kirby Wilson, who coached the running backs here the past two seasons, is joining the Cleveland Browns, who will name him the running game coordinator for new coach Hue Jackson, according to multiple reports.
The Vikings were pretty pleased with Wilson during his two-year tenure. In 2014, he helped them get the most out of Matt Asiata and rookie Jerick McKinnon while star running back Adrian Peterson was banned by the NFL.
This past season, he quickly formed a bond with Peterson, who came back from his long hiatus to win his third career rushing title with 1,485 yards. As a team, the Vikings ranked fourth in the NFL in rushing yards.
With Wilson, whose contract expired Tuesday, headed to Cleveland, coach Mike Zimmer will have to add his second new assistant of the offseason. The Vikings did not try to retain former offensive line coach Jeff Davidson when his contract expired and instead replaced him with former Dolphins head coach Tony Sparano.
•Suspended Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon has applied to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell for reinstatement into the league.
•Bo Hardegree is following Adam Gase to the Dolphins and will be their quarterbacks coach. Hardegree and Gase worked together with the Chicago Bears in 2015 and with the Denver Broncos in 2014.
•Raiders quarterback Derek Carr was added to the roster as an injury replacement for Green Bay's Aaron Rodgers. Jets running back Chris Ivory also was added, replacing injured Bills running back LeSean McCoy. … The Chiefs will be assigned to one of the Pro Bowl teams, against a team coached by Green Bay's Mike McCarthy and his staff.
