Urban farming guru comes to town If the local-food movement has a rock star, it's probably Will Allen, the pro basketball player-turned-urban agriculture pioneer. Allen, a MacArthur "genius" fellow and one of Time magazine's 100 Most Influential People, will be in Minnesota Oct. 22-24 for a series of events hosted by the Women's Environmental Institute (WEI). Allen will be the keynote speaker for WEI's fundraising dinner at Macalester College in St. Paul on Oct. 22, speaking on "The Good Food Revolution." On Oct. 23 and 24, Allen and his Growing Power staff from Milwaukee will conduct a training workshop on how to grow sustainable local food, at the WEI farm campus on Amador Hill in Almelund, Minn. (about an hour northeast of the Twin Cities). Tickets to the fundraising dinner are $60; the weekend training is $250. For more information or to register, contact WEI at www.w-e-i.org or call 651-583-0705.
