Up 2-0, Gophers volleyball can’t complete road upset of No. 11 Purdue

The Gophers soccer team ended its season with a 2-0 loss to Purdue at home.

No. 11 Purdue rallied from a 2-0 deficit for a 19-25, 17-25, 27-25, 25-21, 18-16 victory over the No. 20 Gophers volleyball team on Sunday in West Lafayette, Ind.

The Boilermakers (17-3, 8-2 Big Ten), who are in second place in the Big Ten, trailed 20-18 in the third set before scoring three consecutive points. The Gophers regained the lead at 25-24, but Purdue scored the final three points to win the set.

The teams were tied 12-12 in the fourth set before the Boilermakers went on a 12-5 run to take control.

The Gophers led 8-2 early in the fifth set and led 14-13 before the Boilermakers outscored them 5-2 down the stretch.

Kenna Wollard had 23 kills and 10 digs and Grace Heaney had 22 kills and 11 digs for Purdue. Taylor Anderson had 59 assists and eight digs.

Julia Hanson led the Gophers (16-5, 6-4) with 19 kills and had a career-high four aces. Carly Gilk added 15 kills. Lourdès Myers, who spent four seasons at Purdue, had a season-high nine blocks for the Gophers.

The Gophers play host to Illinois on Wednesday.

The Gophers soccer team concluded its season with a 2-0 loss to Purdue at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium.

Megan Santa Cruz scored in the 11th minute and then assisted on a goal by Irene Camp in the 66th minute for the Boilermakers (6-10-3, 3-7-1 Big Ten).

Sarah Martin made 10 saves for the Gophers (6-8-3, 2-6-3), went into the game in 15th place in the Big Ten standings. Only the top 10 teams advance to the conference tournament, which begins Thursday.
