United forward Burgos to play for El Salvador

Minnesota United forward Rafael Burgos will play for the national team of El Salvador, his native country, in friendly matches against Colombia and Ecuador on Oct. 10 and 14 in Harrison, N.J.

Burgos has been getting more time with Minnesota since joining the Loons at the end of July on loan from SV Ried of Austria. He has made four appearances for United but does not have a point yet.

• Forwards Matt Leitner and Jean-Paul Lafontaine and defenseman Zach Palmquist of Minnesota State Mankato were named to the preseason All-WCHA team picked by the coaches. Leitner also was named the league's preseason player of the year in a media poll.

• Augsburg's Olivia Muyres and St. John's Alex Niederloh were named the MIAC's Athletes of the Week in soccer. Muyres scored both goal in a 2-1 win over Macalester to become the Auggies' career points leader and tie the program record for career goals.

• St. John's Thomas Feichtinger and Macalester's Kimber Meyer were the MIAC's Athletes of the Week in cross-country. Feichtinger was fourth and Meyer third in their races at the Griak Invitational.
