Ultraviolet light fights odors A new type of plug-in product uses light instead of fragrances to counteract odors in the air.

The Germ Guardian UV-C Pluggable Air Sanitizer uses ultraviolet-C light to kill germs, odors and other airborne nasties, such as mold spores and other allergens. A fan circulates air through the unit, where the UV-C light kills 99 percent of the bad stuff, according to the company.

The sanitizer is intended for a small room such as a bathroom or bedroom.

It is available at retailers including some Lowe's, Ace Hardware, True Value, Babies "R" Us and Bed Bath and Beyond stores. It also can be ordered directly from the company at www.germguardian.com or 1-866-603-5900. The direct-order price is $69.99 plus shipping.

Odor beater You've heard it before: Smell is the strongest sense tied to memory. So, if my logic isn't faulty, that means that a home that stinks creates bad memories.

Dutch Boy Refresh Paint is formulated with Arm & Hammer odor-eliminating technology, which captures odors from the air and traps them in the paint film. The latex paint provides a zero Volatile Organic Compound formulation and mildew-resistant coating. Refresh is Indoor Air Quality-certified by the Greenguard Environmental Institute and is available in flat, eggshell and satin latex enamel finishes.

Its plastic container has a resealable, twist-off lid and is lightweight and recyclable.

Cost starts at $23 per gallon.
