Uhl's hat trick powers U in soccer opener

Freshman Taylor Uhl had a hat trick as the Gophers women's soccer team defeated South Dakota State 5-0 in its home opener on Sunday at Robbie Stadium.

Uhl, from Eden Prairie, scored in the seventh, 52nd and 63rd minutes for 11th three-goal game in school history. Nicole Baier and Josie Solie also scored for the Gophers (1-1).

Etc. • A night after losing in the medal round, the U.S. men's basketball team beat Romania 94-73 at the World University Games in China, and will play Germany for fifth place. Canada and Serbia will play for the gold. The Gophers' Trevor Mbakwe had eight rebounds.

• Ole Sheldon hit a two-run homer and the Saints bullpen pitched 3 1/3 innings of scoreless, no-hit relief in a 5-2 victory over the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks at Midway Stadium.
