U women gameday: Gophers vs. Creighton

December 30, 2012 at 6:13AM

Gophers at a glance: Minnesota wraps up its nonconference schedule looking for its fifth consecutive win. The Gophers have steamrolled their previous four opponents, but Sunday's tilt against Creighton might not be so easy. Redshirt freshman Kayla Hirt earned Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors after notching her first career double-double against Northern Iowa. Rachel Banham is averaging 20.1 points per game to lead the Gophers, who are shooting 47.4 percent from the field. Junior Micaella Riche is averaging 12.1 points and a team-leading 6.7 rebounds per game. Freshman guard Shayne Mullaney has been heating up with 17 and 18 points in her previous two games.

Creighton at a glance: The Bluejays roll into Williams Arena on Sunday with a six-game winning streak in hand, which includes a 66-57 victory over Big Ten member and then-ranked Nebraska. Creighton's only two losses this season have come against ranked opponents -- Oklahoma and Kansas -- and the Bluejays are undefeated on the road. Freshman and former Watertown-Mayer High School star Marissa Janning is second on the team in points, averaging 10.1 per game. Sarah Nelson leads the way with 11.8 points and 7.9 rebounds per game. Creighton averages 24.2 three-point shots per game and makes 36.8 percent.

The remaining schedule is favorable, but their hopes of a late-season run were dulled by a home loss to the Terrapins.
