The Gophers volleyball team didn't leave the American Volleyball Coaches Association Showcase empty-handed.
U volleyball beats Oregon in five sets
Ashley Wittman had a career-high 27 kills and the 12th-ranked Gophers beat Oregon 24-26, 25-15, 22-25, 25-18, 15-10 on Saturday in State College, Pa.
The Gophers lost in five sets to second-ranked Southern California in the first match of the showcase Friday, but they bounced back Saturday against another Pacific-12 Conference team. Though the Ducks are unranked, they stunned top-ranked and host Penn State in four sets in Friday's second match.
Wittman hit .417 and also had seven digs, five aces and three blocks for the Gophers, who won the first four points of the fifth set, pulled ahead 14-7 and eventually won the match on a service error by the Ducks' Kellie Kawasaki.
Katherine Harms added 16 kills while hitting .519 for the Gophers. Hailey Cowles had 14 kills and Tori Dixon added 10 kills and seven blocks. Mia Tabberson had 58 assists and nine blocks as the Gophers earned their first victory for interim coach Laura Bush.
Alaina Bergsma led Oregon with 23 kills. But the Ducks hit .190 compared to .323 for the Gophers.
• Deja McClendon had 25 kills as No. 1 Penn State beat No. 2 USC 21-25, 21-25, 25-20, 25-22, 15-8 in Saturday's second match.
Dungey third Ryan Dungey of Belle Plaine finished third in the 450 Class at the AMA Pro Motocross series' rainy Southwick (Mass.) National, with Australian Brett Metcalfe recording his first victory.
Suzuki's Dungey finished first in the first moto but seventh in the second. Metcalfe was third in the first moto and second in the second, with Kawasaki's Ryan Villopoto finishing second. Villopoto leads the season standings after 10 races, eight points ahead of Dungey.
Saints lose at Gary
Host Gary handed the St. Paul Saints their second consecutive American Association loss, winning 5-2 on Saturday night in the opener of a season-ending, four-game series in Indiana.
The Saints stranded men in scoring position in the fifth, seventh and eighth innings. With three games remaining in the regular season, the Saints (53-44) were in danger of falling a game behind Wichita in the wild card standings. Wichita beat El Paso 19-2.
Montreal blanks Stars
Midfielder Sinisa Ubiparipovic scored twice, helping Montreal beat the Minnesota Stars 2-0 at the National Sports Center.
Ubiparipovic put the Impact up in the sixth minute of play, taking a pass from Simon Gatti at the entrance of the 18-yard box and beating Minnesota goalkeeper Joe Warren. Ubiparipovic's second goal came in the 72nd minute.

• Samendra and jockey Dean Butler won the MTA Stallion Auction Laddie Stakes as the betting favorite at Canterbury Park, while All Bets Are Off, at 15-to-1, won the MTA Stallion Auction Lassie with Derek Bell on board. The co-featured stakes each offered a $25,000 purse and were run at 6½ furlongs.
