U swimming teams earn pair of victories

The Gophers men's and women's swimming and diving teams each earned two victories Saturday at the Quad Duals in West Lafayette, Ind.

The eighth-ranked Gophers men beat No. 12 Purdue 203-150 and Wisconsin 265-88 as senior Russ Payne won the 100 backstroke in 49.64 seconds and the 400 individual medley in 3:55.45.

The Gophers women defeated Illinois 140-37 and beat Purdue 120-64. Minnesota's team of Roxane Akradi, Jillian Tyler, Kaylee Jamison and Stacy Busack won the 200 medley relay in 1:43.15.

Minnesota's Yuen Kobayashi won the 1,000 freestyle in 9:53.66 and Tyler won the 200 breaststroke in 2:13.12. Kobayashi also placed second in the 200 freestyle in 1:51.58. Jenny Shaughnessy won the 400 individual medley in 4:19.25,

Jacqueline Schroeder won the platform diving event with a score of 269.25.

Kibira wins mile at Nebraska Gophers senior Eddie Kibira won the special men's mile run in 4:13.70 Saturday at the Husker Invitational in Lincoln, Neb.

Minnesota finished second in the men's distance medley relay in 10:11.93. Hassan Mead finished third in the 3,000-meter run in 8:13.08 and David VanOrsdel finished fourth in the mile in 4:15.21.

Swarm wins again Craig Point had seven points (two goals, five assists) and Sean Pollock and Ryan Ward each had two goals and four assists as the Swarm stayed unbeaten with a 14-12 National Lacrosse League victory over San Jose in San Jose, Calif.

Etc. • Top-ranked Penn State won all six team events and defeated the Gophers men's gymnasts (3-6, 2-4 Big Ten) in a dual meet at State College, Pa. The Gophers had their second-best point total of the season but still lost 354.200-343.450. Gophers junior Kit Beikmann won the pommel horse, and sophomore Colin McGuire won the high bar.

• North Carolina, the 17th-ranked team in the nation, handed the Gophers women's tennis team its first loss of the season, 7-0 in Chapel Hill, N.C.
