U.S. men's basketball team gets back on winning track against Canada

After losing for the first time in nearly 13 years two days earlier, the United States rebounded to outclass Canada 84-68 in a pre-World Cup exhibition basketball game Monday in Sydney.

On Saturday, Australia stunned the U.S. 98-94 before a crowd of more than 52,000 in Melbourne, a result that ended the Americans' 78-game winning streak.

Jaylen Brown had 19 points to lead the Americans, who outrebounded Canada 55-37. Donovan Mitchell added 12 points and four assists.

Beckham returns

Browns star receiver Odell Beckham Jr. returned to team drills during practice for the first time in nearly three weeks.

Beckham, who has not played in any of Cleveland's exhibition games, has been slowed a hip injury the team insists is minor.

• The Chiefs lost backup quarterback Chad Henne to a broken ankle that will require surgery in their penultimate preseason game, and they signed veteran Matt Moore to provide depth behind starter Patrick Mahomes.

Transfer to start at QB for Maryland

Josh Jackson will be Maryland's starting quarterback in Saturday's season opener against Howard. The graduate transfer from Virginia Tech who arrived this summer won the spot over redshirt junior Tyrrell Pigrome. Jackson started for the Hokies as a redshirt freshman, throwing for 2,991 yards and 20 touchdowns. Jackson added another 324 yards and six touchdowns rushing. ... Redshirt freshman Michael Penix Jr. will be the starting quarterback for Indiana in Saturday's season opener against Ball State. ... Shea Patterson is set to start for No. 7 Michigan in its season opener Saturday night against Middle Tennessee. Patterson threw for 2,600 yards and 22 touchdowns last season, his first with the Wolverines after transferring from Mississippi. ... A former Penn State team doctor is suing the school, coach James Franklin and athletic director Sandy Barbour, claiming he was ousted after complaining to school officials about being pressured to clear players to return from injuries. ... North Carolina is starting true freshman Sam Howell at quarterback for Saturday's opener against South Carolina.
