The University of Minnesota announced on Monday that it completed its $53.2 million renovation and expansion of its Center for Magnetic Resonance Research.
The expanded center will contain a 10.5 Tesla MRI, which the university says is "one of the world's largest and most powerful human imaging magnets."
Kamil Ugurbil, the center's director, said the expansion "has opened doors for new research," pointing to the university's participation in the Human Connectome Project. The $30 million study, which involves nine research centers, will examine brain functions in adults.
The center is part of the U's Biomedical Discovery District, which encompasses space for scientists to do research in areas such as diabetes, cancer and other diseases. The university has invested $292 million in the district.
