The University of Minnesota has lost 75 faculty spots in the past year alone, its president Robert Bruininks told the Board of Regents on Friday morning.
"I don't think you can keep cutting faculty and expect to deliver the same quality of education for our students -- the quality they have the right to expect for the cost of education today," he said.
So, when requesting $102.2 million in new money from the state over the next two years, Bruininks is promising that $19.6 million of that would be used to "restore" faculty positions.
Another $19.6 million would be used for student financial support, including scholarships and student worker positions. About $63 million would be used for "meeting core costs," such as increased compensation building operations.
Although faculty, administrators and staff have taken one-time pay cuts this year, Bruininks'budget plans, for now, include making them whole, he said.
