Both Gophers basketball teams came away with half a Big Ten player of the week award following the college basketball season's opening weekend.
Senior forward Joey King shared the men's award with Northwestern's Alex Olah on Monday, while on the women's side Gophers senior guard Mikayla Bailey split the honor with Rutgers' Kahleah Copper.
Both Gophers players earned their first career player of the week awards. King scored a career-high 22 points in Friday night's season-opening victory over Missouri-Kansas City, making six three-pointers while pulling down four rebounds, and he followed that with 20 points in Sunday's victory over Louisiana Monroe, in which he went 9-for-10 at the free-throw line and also had a game-high eight rebounds.
Bailey set a career high in points (26) and rebounds (13) in a 98-54 victory over Wofford to open the season on Friday night. Bailey shot 6-for-11 from beyond the arc that night and 10-for-16 overall, and she also had five assists and three steals.
U volleyball at No. 3
Fresh off its first victory over then-No. 1 Penn State in 11 meetings, the Gophers volleyball team moved up one spot in the poll while retaining its No. 1 rank in the Ratings Percentage Index. The Big Ten-leading Gophers (23-3, 15-1 Big Ten) enter their two-match week on a 14-match winning streak.
The Gophers moved up from No. 4 to No. 3 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association poll, receiving seven of 64 first-place votes. Southern California (27-1) returned to No. 1 after falling out two weeks earlier following a loss at Washington (24-2), which is now ranked No. 2. USC received 47 first-place votes, the Huskies 10.
The Nittany Lions (24-3), who lost 25-23, 25-20, 25-21 to the Gophers on Saturday night, fell from No. 1 to No. 4.
Texas is ranked fifth, followed by Nebraska, Stanford, Hawaii, Kansas and Wisconsin.
In the RPI, Texas, USC and Florida round out the top four. In the top 10, five hail from the Big Ten: Gophers (1), Wisconsin (7), Penn State (8), Nebraska (9) and Ohio State (10).
Minnesota plays host to Maryland at 6 p.m. Wednesday, a match that will be televised live on the Big Ten Network.
• Hannah Tapp was named the Big Ten defensive player of the week after her performances against Northwestern and Penn State. It's Tapp's second honor this year and the Golden Gophers' 13th of the season. Tapp held a team-best 15 blocks (2.14 per set) in the victories over the Wildcats and Nittany Lions. She also had 23 kills, which averaged 3.29 per set and hit .340 in 53 attempts.
• The Northwestern (Roseville) football team accepted the National Christian College Athletic Association's invitation to the Victory Bowl. The Eagles will travel to Waxahachie, Texas, to play NAIA Southwest Assemblies of God on Saturday.
