U baseball team beats No. 9 UConn

The Gophers baseball team defeated No. 9 Connecticut 3-2 in its second game of the Big Ten/Big East Challenge in Clearwater, Fla., on Saturday.

Phil Isaksson, Billy Soule and Scott Matyas combined to limit UConn to two runs. Isaksson started and pitched five innings, giving up three hits and one unearned run, walking two and striking out three.

Soule won in relief, giving up three hits, one run and striking out three in 2 2/3 innings.

Matyas picked up the save, as he struck out a batter and pitched 1 1/3 shutout innings.

Swimming and diving Gophers Jillian Tyler and Ashley Steenvoorden both captured their second event titles in the fourth and final day of the Big Ten women's swimming and diving championships in Bloomington, Ind. The Gophers, despite scoring a school-record 578 points, finished second behind three-time team champion Indiana (821 points).

The U swept the contest's two individual Big Ten awards: Tyler was named top swimmer and Kelci Bryant top diver of the championships. Bryant captured the 1-meter and 3-meter diving titles for the second season in a row.

Tyler finished her Big Ten career as an eight-time conference champion with four titles.

U softball splits The Gophers softball team split two games with Loyola Marymount in Riverside, Calif., winning the first game 7-2 before losing 6-5 later in the afternoon.

In the opener, Alex Davis and Kari Dorle each hit a two-run home run. Jessie Hathaway went 2-for-2 with a sacrifice bunt, two singles and a walk.

In the second game, the Gophers struggled to score after the first two innings.

Gophers freshman pitcher Sara Moulton pitched all seven innings of the opener and struck out 17 in the two games.

U men's tennis wins The No. 26 Gophers men's tennis team won its fifth consecutive match, 6-1 at No. 41 Nebraska. The Gophers are 6-1 overall and 5-1 against ranked teams. Their only loss came at UCLA, then ranked sixth, in January.

The Gophers won the doubles point but had to rally for it after losing the day's first doubles match. Then Brendan Ruddock and Julian Dehn won 8-3 at No. 3 doubles against Calin Paar and Taylor Boney. The U claimed the key doubles point when Phillip Arndt and Sebastian Gallego beat Sebastian Florczyk and Andre Stenger 8-3 at the No. 1 position.

Boston beats Swarm Josh Sanderson had four goals and two assists, lifting Boston to a 14-11 victory over the Swarm in a National Lacrosse League game at Xcel Energy Center. The Swarm fell to 3-4; the Blazers are 6-3.
