Two elementary schools in the Rosemount-Apple Valley-Eagan district will become magnet schools in 2016, a switch the district hopes will balance minority student populations and offer students more educational options. The schools are Echo Park in Burnsville and Oak Ridge in Eagan. The magnet strategy has worked elsewhere in the district, officials said.
The school board recently approved the new overarching themes for the two schools: Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) and leadership. Those emerged as top choices in surveys of parents and staff and at several community meetings. At Echo Park, there will be added focus on engineering and technology. Oak Ridge will focus on environmental and health sciences.
