With the sixth overall pick of the MLB first-year player draft, the Twins selected Illinois lefthander Tyler Jay. Not big but throws in the mid-90's with a good breaking ball.
Jay started on Monday for the Illini in a loss to Vanderbilt that knocked them out of the NCAA tournament. He relieved most of the season, but the Twins feel he has enough pitches to be a starter.
``We believe he has a legitimate chance to start," Twins scouting director Deron Johnson said. ``He throws strikes. He's athletic."
