Alex Wimmers, a righthander from Ohio State, was selected by the Twins with the 21st overall pick of Monday's draft.
Wimmers went 9-0 with a 1.60 ERA for the Buckeyes this season. In 73 innings, he struck out 86 and walked 23, but scouting reports describe him as a strike-thrower with good pitching acumen. His fastball touches the low 90's.
Joe McIlvaine, the Twins special assignment scout, told MLBTV that Wimmers changes speeds very well.
``His change up was as good as any major leaguer," McIlvaine said. ``He has a fastball that tails on the inside part of the plate or cuts on the outside part of the plate."
More on Wimmers soon...
Update: Low 90's? Changeup guy? Sounds like this guy's ceiling would be Brad Radke.
Here's what Baseball America's Jim Callis tweeted moments after the pick:
Callis: Wimmers fits Twins mold, polished pitcher. Don't underrate his stuff. He's not close to a finesse guy.
