The robots designed to integrate with animals in “Spy in the Wild” are awfully cute, but I’m not convinced they make the best scientists. Producers insist the cameras inside these artificial pets are getting footage we wouldn’t normally be privy to, but based on the first episode of this limited documentary series, I didn’t see anything a super-lens camera and lots of patience couldn’t have captured. At the very least, the computerized critters would make great pets for the residents of “Westworld.”

Steve Harvey returns for the second of two “Showtime at the Apollo” specials, each designed to give viewers a taste of what it’s like to visit the Harlem institution, with highlights from the venue’s famous Amateur Nights. Professionals like Chaka Khan and T.I. are also on hand for what soon could be another full-time gig for its busy host.

Laurence Fishburne, who starred opposite Angela Bassett in a 2006 production of “Fences” at the Pasadena Playhouse, may be smarting that he didn’t get a chance to reprise his role for the screen. But don’t feel too bad for the actor. He’s making a nice career lately out of playing historical figures, including Thurgood Marshall and Alex Haley. His latest: Nelson Mandela in the three-part miniseries “Madiba.” The production continues for the next two Wednesdays.
