Instant karma
Medical series have become as routine — and discomforting — as physical exams, with most of them following pretty much the same prescription. "The Good Karma Hospital" doesn't break ground, but by setting the action in southern India, this British export seems fresh and innovative. The drama will invariably draw favorable comparisons to "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel." The digs aren't quite as lush, but you'll be glad you checked in.

Horror is having a terrific summer at the box office, although the genre continues to prioritize making you wet your pants over making you think. It's possible to do both, as proven by 1991's "The Silence of the Lambs" and 1995's "Se7en," a double feature guaranteed to give your brain and your blood pressure a workout.

Minneapolis native Yara Shahidi is getting ready to shoot the "Black-ish" spinoff "Grown-ish," but she's already proven herself a leading lady on the advocacy circuit. In fact, the 17-year-old has made enough of a mark to be honored on "Black Girls Rock! 2017" alongside Maxine Waters and Roberta Flack. Taraji P. Henson hosts this previously taped ceremony.
