TV critic's picks: Wednesday

"Smartest Machine on Earth," "Mr. Sunshine," "Justified"

Brain power Smarty pants, beware! "Smartest Machine on Earth" (8 p.m., KTCA, Ch. 2), a new installment of "Nova," looks at how scientists have created Watson, a computer built with the sole purpose of beating Ken Jennings in "Jeopardy!" It's a pretty fascinating experiment, but I'm still waiting to hear from the team creating a kitty cat that can whoop tail on "Wheel of Fortune."

Bing! If Courteney Cox can star in a winning ABC sitcom, why can't another former "Friend"? In "Mr. Sunshine" (8:30 p.m., KSTP, Ch. 5), Matthew Perry stars as a director of an Xcel Center-sized auditorium, juggling a tattered love life, a certifiable boss (Allison Janney, who's wonderfully over-the-top) and one crazy booking after another. Think what would have happened to Chandler Bing if he hadn't nabbed Monica and you've pretty much got the character. Yep, it's that funny.

Gun play I'll readily admit that it took me a while to warm up to "Justified" (9 p.m., FX), but as the show kicks off its second season, I'm an unabashed fan, thanks in no small part to the "frenemy" relationship between U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant) and childhood buddy Boyd Crowder (Walton Goggins). It just might be the creepiest love affair since George and Martha in "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf."
