TV critic's picks: Wednesday

"Face Off," "Hot in Cleveland" and "Silencing the Song: An Afghan Fallen Star"

Monster mess It's a little early to name the comedy of the year, but I can't imagine guffawing harder than I did at the premiere of "Face Off" (9 p.m., Syfy). I'm not sure the creators of this new reality series meant to create a laugher, but wait until you see the first challenge: special-effects artists turning models into animal-inspired villains. It's the craziest Halloween party you've ever seen.

One cameo at a time Last week, Betty White reunited with Mary Tyler Moore. Now it's Valerie Bertinelli's turn to meet up with an old friend. "One Day at a Time's" Bonnie Franklin pops up as the mother of Bertinelli's boyfriend in a new episode of "Hot in Cleveland" (9 p.m., TV Land). The only thing missing is Schneider popping by to check the ladies' pipes.

Hair-raising experience In last year's documentary "Afghan Star" (5:30 p.m., HBO2), which looked at an "American Idol"-inspired show in Afghanistan, contestant Setara made the mistake of exposing her hair during a dance performance. The repercussions of such an act are examined in the sequel "Silencing the Song: An Afghan Fallen Star" (7 p.m., HBO2), in which we learn there are worse things than having Simon Cowell scowl at you.
