Revenge of the nerds Christian Slater revisits his Jack Nicholson impression for "Breaking In" (8:30 p.m., KMSP, Ch. 9), a somewhat amusing comedy about a high-tech security firm that's as committed to protecting companies as it is to playing practical jokes. There's solid chemistry between the cast, and Slater is slyly appealing as the firm's boss, but high-tech security doesn't seem like a sustainable setting for laughs.
Quitting time Every so often cable TV takes a chance on a risque, ambitious sitcom that ignores the rules. "Workaholics" (9:30 p.m., Comedy) is not one of those times. This all too predictable sitcom about man-boys who try not to let their jobs interfere with their partying would be an embarrassment on the networks, so it's even more shameful for a cable network with "comedy" in its title.
Out with the old It says something about Elvis Costello's power as a performer that he can turn out a concert filled almost entirely with new material and still leave you satisfied. Costello and the Sugarcanes turn the New York Public Library into a musical paradise for the season opener of "Live From the Artists Den" (11 p.m., KTCA, Ch. 2). While die-hard fans may lament the absence of "Alison," they'll certainly be grateful for the cover of Little Willie John's "Leave My Kitten Alone," which Costello first recorded in 1986.
