ALL MY CHILDREN - Award-winning actress Carol Burnett will return to "All My Children" for a few episodes this September as Verla Grubbs. "All My Children" airs Monday-Friday (1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network. (ABC/Rick Rowell) SUSAN LUCCI, CAROL BURNETT

Rock and roll all nite

Enter the weekend rocking out to Minnesota's own Jayhawks on "The Late Show With David Letterman" (10:35 p.m. Friday, WCCO, Ch. 4) or to the world premiere of "Nirvana: Live at the Paramount" (10 p.m. Friday, VH1 and VH1 Classic), a historic concert on Halloween night 1991 in the band's hometown of Seattle.

End of an era

Time for one last scheme from Erica Kane. She and the rest of Pine Valley wave goodbye in the final episode of the 41-year-old soap "All My Children" (noon Friday, KSTP, Ch. 5). For an earlier bout of tears, catch a special edition of "The View" (10 a.m., KSTP, Ch. 5) with guest appearances by Susan Lucci and creator Agnes Nixon.

Save the children

You want to root for the 10- to 16-year-old singers invited to take part in "Majors & Minors" (7 p.m. Friday, Hub), a reality show in which they are mentored by such stars as Brandy and Colbie Caillat. There's just one problem: Based on a live performance I saw in July, they're not very good. Let's hope they got better.

The rise of the empire

"Boardwalk Empire" (8 p.m. Sunday, HBO) returns with more intrigue, more twists and more action than its shaky first season. Steve Buscemi is fine as usual, but keep your eye on Kelly Macdonald as the mistress who is more and more willing to turn the other way to provide for herself and her children. The grandmother of Carmela Soprano, perhaps?
