Wayzata senior Bobby Isbell delivered a game-winning single past the third-base bag with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, capping a three-run rally as the Trojans edged Hopkins 7-6 for the Class 4A, Section 6 baseball title Tuesday at Siebert Field. The victory gives the Trojans (16-6), ranked No. 4 by Let's Play Baseball, a chance to defending their state championship.
Senior Danny Deis walked with the bases loaded to tie the score at 6-all, setting the stage for Isbell. Classmate Will Oberg scored the first run of the inning on a sacrifice fly.
Oberg went 3-for-3 with a walk and three RBI. He also scored two runs.
Hopkins scored three runs in the top of the seventh to take a 6-4 lead. The Royals (13-11) earlier held a 3-0 lead.
In other section championships:
Section 1: No. 9-ranked Lakeville North scored the final four runs, rallying for a 5-4 triumph over New Prague. The Panthers tied it with three in the fifth, and scored the deciding run on a sacrifice fly in the seventh.
Section 6: Woodbury scored three runs, two coming on an error, in the fifth to break a tie en route to a 4-1 triumph over No. 1 Stillwater. The Royals (16-8) beat the Ponies by the identical score earlier in the tourney.
Section 1: Teddy Tauer started a three-run sixth with a two-run single as No. 6 Red Wing rallied to beat No. 10 Northfield 6-4. Tauer tied the score 3-3 earlier on an RBI single.
Section 5: Logan Aleshire threw a two-hitter while striking out 10, leading No. 1 St. Cloud Tech to a 4-1 victory over St. Cloud Apollo. Tech is 24-0.
Section 6: Robert Smith's hit off the shortstop's glove with one out in the bottom of the eighth scored Nolan Vanderhoff with the winning run as No. 2 Waconia beat Benilde-St. Margaret's 3-2. Waconia is 23-0.
