On Monday, the Illini (16-3, 4-2 Big Ten) made their first appearance in The Associated Press' Top 25 since the final poll of 2005-06. It was the Illini's first victory over the Buckeyes (13-4, 3-3) in six games.

Illinois took the lead for good in the opening 5 minutes, then sealed the victory with a 22-9 run in the second half. Demetri McCamey had 13 points for Illinois and Chester Frazier had 10.

B.J. Mullens had 14 points for the Buckeyes, who had won three in a row, and freshman William Buford had 13.

NO. 21 RUTGERS 60, WEST VIRGINIA 44: Epiphanny Prince scored 24 points for the Scarlet Knights (11-5, 3-2 Big East), who held the visiting Mountaineers (11-7, 0-5) without a field goal for nearly 10 minutes in the first half.

NOTES

• Senior forward Cyrus Tate, Iowa's best post presence, likely will miss the Hawkeyes' next two games because of a high ankle sprain he suffered Jan. 8 against the Gophers.

• Kansas officials are checking to see if men's basketball coach Bill Self's brief encounter with a top recruit might constitute an NCAA infraction. Self agrees he said hello to John Wall, a 6-4 guard who had just played in a high school tournament last Thursday in Springfield, Mo. "We are aware of the report, and the administration is looking into it," said Chris Theisen, a Kansas spokesman. The question is whether the NCAA would consider Self and Wall's exchange as contact.

• The Big East has decided not to take any action following Connecticut coach Geno Auriemma's postgame exchange with Syracuse player Nicole Michael on Saturday. Auriemma had words with Michael in the handshake line after the Huskies' 107-53 victory, and was pulled away from the junior forward by assistant coach Shea Ralph.
