Guard stars for Spartans
•NO. 13 MICHIGAN STATE 79, NO. 4 KANSAS 73: Denzel Valentine had a triple double — 29 points, 12 assists and 11 rebounds — as the Spartans beat the Jayhawks in the Champions Classic on Tuesday night in Chicago. Perry Ellis had 21 points for Kansas (1-1) which led by six points at halftime.
•NO. 2 KENTUCKY 74, NO. 5 DUKE 63: Tyler Ulis had 18 points and six assists, and the Wildcats used their speed and athleticism to hold off the Blue Devils in the Champions Classic. Kentucky (3-0) forced 16 turnovers and outscored Duke 18-4 in fast-break points. Amile Jefferson led Duke (2-1) with 16 points and 15 rebounds, and Marshall Plumlee had 12 points, 10 rebounds and six blocks. Grayson Allen, who scored 54 points in Duke's first two games, had six.
•NO. 3 MARYLAND 75, GEORGETOWN 71: Rasheed Sulaimon hit a three-pointer with 1:18 left to break a tie, and the Terrapins got 24 points from Melo Trimble to edge the neighboring Hoyas in College Park, Md. Bradley Hayes had 16 points and eight rebounds for Georgetown.
•NO. 8 OKLAHOMA 84, MEMPHIS 78: Buddy Hield scored 30 points, including hitting four free throws in the final 14 seconds, as the Sooners edged the host Tigers. Memphis led 76-75 with 1:38 to go following a layup by freshman Dedric Lawson, who had 22 points and 15 rebounds. This was the Sooners' first victory over Memphis in seven games.
•TULSA 77, NO. 9 WICHITA STATE 67: Shaquille Harrison scored 20 points and Marquel Curtis added 16 to help the Hurricanes upset the Shockers, overcoming three years of frustration against Tulsa, which had won a school-record seven in a row in the long-running series.
