In the most exciting team match of the day at state wrestling, Zumbrota-Mazeppa defeated Paynesville 30-27 on the strength of a triple-overtime win at heavyweight.

The Class 1A quarterfinal ended when Z-M's Jordan Arndt defeated Paynesville's Dominick Platow 5-3 in three OT's. The score was 27-27 through 13 weights.

"We knew it would be a very close dual," said Z-M coach Link Steffen. " We have dang near identical teams, so we knew it was going to be a nail-biter. Sure enough, it comes down to heavyweight overtime. It could have went either way. Today it went our way." The Gophers played with more urgency, but it wasn’t enough to keep them from another conference sweep, and they lost LJ Mooney to injury in the process.
