Former Gophers basketball center Trevor Mbakwe, who graduated from St. Bernard's High School, has signed to play for Maccabi Electra, one of the top professional basketball teams overseas.

The signing was reported on the Maccabi web site and other international media -- and the club released a video, which is heavy on his highlights while playing at Minnesota.

Mbakwe averaged 10 points and nine rebounds per game as a senior for the Gophers. He played for a team that won the German League championship.

Maccabi, which dates back to the 1930s, has won the Israeli basketball title 51 times and has won six Euroleague championships. Its former coach is David Blatt, who was hired by the Cleveland Cavaliers after Maccabi won the 2014 Euroleague title.

Former Gophers point guard Ariel McDonald played for Maccabi from 1999-2002.
