Tommies finish regular season unbeaten, await playoffs

St. Thomas wrapped up its third consecutive unbeaten regular season with a 35-21 victory over St. Olaf in St. Paul on Saturday.

It was the 34th consecutive regular-season victory and 27th in the MIAC for the Tommies, ranked No. 3 in the AFCA Division III poll.

St. Olaf led 7-0 after the first quarter, but the Tommies scored 28 unanswered points in the second and third quarters to take a 28-14 lead midway through the third quarter.

Freshman Brenton Braddock rushed for a career-high 207 yards and a touchdown in 29 carries for the Tommies (10-0, 8-0 MIAC).

Matt Allen caught two touchdown passes and Matt O'Connell threw two TD passes for the Tommies.

Dan Dobson threw three touchdown passes -- two to Stephen Asp -- and Michael Thai rushed for 111 yards for the Oles (7-3, 5-3).

The Tommies, who lost to Wisconsin-Whitewatwer in the national semifinals last season, will be making their fourth consecutive appearance in the Division III playoffs. The 32-team playoffs field will be announced on Sunday.

Concordia (Moorhead) 29, Gustavus 10: Brett Baune rushed for three TDs in the second half to help the Cobbers (8-2, 6-2) pull away for this victory over the Gusties (3-7, 2-6) in St. Peter, Minn.

Baune, who rushed for 77 yards in 19 carries, scored on runs of 4, 1 and 4 yards as the Cobbers outscored the Gusties 19-0 in the second half.

Ben Wolf rushed for 95 yards and a touchdown for the Cobbers.

Macalester 45, Hamline 21: Macalester retained possession of the Old Paint Bucket with this nonconference victory over the host Pipers.

Clark Bledsoe passed for three touchdowns and rushed for one and T. Joe Loiselle scored two TDs to lead Macalester (6-4). Mike Adams contributed 153 rushing yards for the Scots.
