Concordia (St. Paul) won't win an eighth consecutive NCAA Division II volleyball title.
Southwest Minnesota State upset the Golden Bears 25-21, 23-25, 25-22 and 28-26 on Friday in the Central Regional semifinals in Duluth.
Concordia (27-6) led 26-25 in the fourth set, but the Mustangs (23-9) got the next three points on Abby Thissen's kill and two attack errors. Thissen led the Mustangs with 20 kills, Anna Schlaak had 15 for Concordia.
The Golden Bears had won 43 consecutive NCAA matches.
Minnesota Duluth also reached the region final with a 3-0 win over Wayne (Neb.) State.
No. 1 Mavs fall in OT
Central Missouri upset No. 1-rated Minnesota State Mankato 3-2 in overtime on Friday in the round of 16 in the NCAA Division II women's soccer tournament in Somers, Wis. After trailing 2-0 at halftime, the Mavericks (22-1) tied the score on goals by Korey Kronforst on a rebound in the 51st minute and by Dana Savino on a penalty kick in the 71st minute. Freshman Mikala Modiri scored for the No. 10 Jennies (21-0-2) in the second minute of the extra period.
Olympians make splash
Led by a sub-19 second effort in the 50-yard freestyle by Olympic gold medalist Nathan Adrian, U.S. Olympians picked up five victories Friday at the Arena Grand Prix at Minneapolis. He won in 18.83.
Olympic medalists Elizabeth Beisel and Tyler Clary (claimed their second wins at the University of Minnesota's Aquatic Center, while Caitlin Leverenz and Connor Jaeger won their first events on Day 2. The 500 freestyle winners were Beisel (4:37) and Jaeger (4:15.05), the 200 butterfly winners Leverenz (1:54.34) and Clary (1:44.73).
