Party in the Park with 'MN Original'

TPT's new series "MN Original" is one of the first programs to offer an intimate look into the creative process of local artists. At this official launch party, local musicians featured on the show -- such as Caroline Smith and the Goodnight Sleeps, Nachito Herrera and the Mad Ripple -- will play live sets. Face off with local art luminaries Calpurnia Peach, Doug Padilla, Andy Ducett and Mary Griep at mnartists.org's "Drawing Club," load up on fresh tacos from Barrio and pick up some local art. Local punk legend Chris Osgood will emcee.

Red Bull Flugtag

Chances are you've seen the ads for the Red Bull Flugtag and thought, what the...? Flugtag, apparently, is German for "airshow" or "flying day," but in this case it refers to Red Bull's touring event in which competitors fly wacky, homemade flying machines off a 30-foot deck into a body of water. This is the first time the international event is making its way to the Twin Cities. Competitors are judged on three categories: distance, creativity and showmanship. Expect more entertainment value than actual skill in the crafts, which launch from Harriet Island on the banks of the Mississippi River. DJs Millions Billions and Tendercakes kick things off on Friday with a free Red Bull-sponsored Flugtag edition of their Let's Dance night at St. Paul's Half Time Rec.

Bearded Lady Motorcycle Freakshow

For five years, this wacky carnival-slash-motorcycle meet-up has offered its kitschy blend of rockin' live music, burlesque, block party and freak-show attractions. This year's lineup includes the Brass Kings, Al's Rockabilly Quartet, the Reckless Ones, the Shockers, Riff Lord and Red Desert, with burlesque by Le Cirque Rouge. Or head out onto the streets for ample people-watching -- think cigarette girls, roving clowns, and yes, bearded ladies on bikes. For $10, motorcycle devotees can enter their prized possession into a juried motorcycle contest.

ZubazPalooza

St. Paul has the proud if slightly embarrassing distinction of being the birthplace of Zubaz -- those crazy zebra-printed, loose-fitting pants last seen in the early '90s. Apparently, Zubaz relaunched a few years back, and is enjoying a resurgence. Now the company celebrates its 21st birthday with a Zubaz-themed pub crawl in Minneapolis. A $21 wristband not only gets you a spankin' new pair of the zany pants (valued at $30), you'll also get a T-shirt, drink specials, and totally tubular prizes. The crawl starts at the Ugly Mug in the Warehouse District, heads to Sneaky Pete's and ends at Smalley's 87 Club.
