If you hate it, don't settle.

Q I went to a friend's hairdresser a couple of weeks ago -- and got a hack job. My friend said I should go back and have the hairdresser fix what I don't like. Can I do that?

A If you're unhappy with a haircut, it's best to speak up right away. Since you didn't call after a day or two, you should look for a new hairdresser.

Ask your friends and colleagues for recommendations for someone who is competent, empathetic and won't mind fixing another stylist's mistake. Take pictures with you to illustrate the style you have in mind, explain to the new hairdresser what the problem is and talk about possible solutions.

In the meantime, fashion your own quick fix with headbands, clips and barrettes or hide your bad-hair days under a chic hat or head scarf.
