Opening Friday: From the U.S. Embassy in Athens to the staterooms of the Queen Mary 2 cruise ship, Thomas Paquette's lyrical landscapes have traveled the world. The graduate of Bemidji State University brings a sophisticated sense of color and design to his keenly observed scenes, which range from mountain valleys to seacoasts, South Dakota roadways to the forests of northern Minnesota in all seasons. For his new show in Minneapolis, Paquette is playing up the effects of light in different seasons and times of day. Even on a bitter winter afternoon, the setting sun can warm a snow-clad hillside by wrapping trees in apricot light and casting lilac shadows over distant horizons. Paquette's "The Substance of Light" will occupy the Groveland Annex while Groveland's main gallery will feature five artists "Painting in Place" -- Fred Anderson, Gary Bowling, Samantha French, Tom Maakestad and Dani Roach. (Opening receptions 5-8 p.m. Fri. Free. Groveland Gallery and Annex, 25 Groveland Terrace, Mpls. Open noon-5 p.m. Tue.-Sat. Ends Jan. 15. 612-377-7800 or grovelandgallery.com) MARY ABBE
