The Garage, formerly a city-run youth center in Burnsville, will reopen this summer under new sponsorship with a new role: as an all-ages music venue and music-education center.

Housed in the city's old maintenance facility, the Garage opened in 1999 and provided homework help, after-school activities and weekend concerts. It was well used, but in January the city decided it didn't particularly want to be in the business of designing after-school programs or managing a youth center. The school-related activities are now housed at Nicollet Junior High.

Meanwhile, come July, the Garage will be run by a nonprofit called Twin Cities Catalyst Music. Ticket sales, fees from music lessons, and grants and donations will help support the facility.
