Case of 'Crazies' Director Breck Eisner's remake of George Romero's 1973 classic "The Crazies" nods to contemporary anti-government sentiment, but its military villains are as faceless as the virus that turns the residents of Ogden Marsh into blood-spattered psychopaths -- and substantially less scary. Timothy Olyphant plays Sheriff David Dutton, the first to connect a series of shocking local deaths with a downed military plane in the nearby swamp. He struggles to escape quarantine along with his pregnant wife (Radha Mitchell) and his live-wire deputy (Joe Anderson). In the end, we're left with the ragtag trio and their charms. The DVD and Blu-ray (Anchor Bay, $30-$40), available Tuesday, include commentary and featurettes.
Trouble before war With its austere black-and-white cinematography and meticulously composed frames, "The White Ribbon" (Sony, $29-$39; German, with subtitles) lunges hungrily for serious art-film credibility. Set in a small northern German town on the cusp of World War I, writer-director Michael Haneke's macabre story features a community riven by class resentment, mutual suspicion and lies that come to the fore when a series of mysterious violent crimes occur.
