TFD: ESPN's Trent Dilfer puts Christian Ponder in the "short leash" category for QBs

Good times.

Reader Adam L. notes that that front page of ESPN.com right now features a tease to analyst Trent Dilfer breaking down QBs who are elite, close to elite and not even close.

Dilfer puts Christian Ponder in the "short leash" category among the 40 he ranks. That's pretty close to the bottom of the barrel, next to the likes of Colt McCoy, Blaine Gabbert, T-Jack and, yes, Tim Tebow. Says Dilfer of Ponder:

He will be the Week 1 starter, but will need to show he's on an upward trajectory for 2012.

It's an Insider article, so only bother clicking here if you have access. For now, we'll just note that QB rating is hardly a perfect metric. But Ponder was at 70.1 last year; Dilfer's career mark was 70.2.

Guess Dilfer should have been on a short leash for all 113 of his career starts.
