While doing some Paul Molitor research today, we fell down a strange rabbit hole that led us to a major piece of baseball history that we flat-out never knew about.
Essentially, Molitor's first games as a rookie in 1978 with the Brewers came as a shortstop because Robin Yount, the team's star SS at the time, was sitting out pouting.
Say what? Here's the relevant passage from "Nine Innings: The Anatomy of a Baseball Game":
Game logs from 1978 show Yount didn't return to reclaim his shortstop spot until May 15. Imagine how that would play out today. Amazing.
