Target, Wolves extend deal for naming rights

Target Corp. and the Timberwolves, along with AEG Facilities, have announced the extension of Target Center's naming rights partnership through 2014.

Target has been the sole naming-rights holder of Target Center since the building opened in 1990.

"This short-term extension allows both Target and the Timberwolves to fully understand the future renovation plan to Target Center," said Chris Wright, Timberwolves president.

The Target Center is managed by AEG Facilities and owned by the City of Minneapolis.

Tommies reach No. 3 in Division III poll The University of St. Thomas football team (3-0) climbed one spot to third in this week's D3Football.com poll.

It's the highest national ranking for Tommies football in school history, and highest rank for an MIAC team since late in the 2007 season.

It also marks the 21st consecutive D3Football.com poll that includes the Tommies in the top 10.

Bethel University (3-0) stayed at No. 5 this week.

St. Thomas is also ranked third in the first Division III poll of the season released Monday by the American Football Coaches' Association (AFCA).

In the AFCA Division II Poll, the University of Minnesota Duluth has been knocked from its No. 1 perch, dropping all the way to No. 11 in the latest rankings on the heels of last Saturday's 7-0 loss at Wayne State College.

Gophers women golfers tied for eighth With round one in the books, the Gophers women's golf team is tied for eighth place at the 18-team Golfweek Conference Challenge in Wolcott, Colo. The Gophers' team score of 302 ties them with Notre Dame.

Banchalee Theinthong shot a team-low score of 72. She will enter Day 2 in a four-way tie for sixth place. Theinthong recorded three birdies and three bogeys to come out even at the end of the round.

Carmen Laguna posted a 75, Jackie Shepherd a 77, Aubrie Nelson a 78 and Sarinee Thitiratanakorn an 87.

Pokegama team leads MGA tournament The four-man team from Pokegama Golf Club (Clinton Cornell, Matt Schneider, Michael Christensen and Derek Rolle) led the first round of the 10th Minnesota Golf Association Team Championship Golden Eagle Golf Course in Fifty Lakes, Minn.

Eleven four-man teams are competing in the two-of-four best ball format in which they are split into two squads of two and the better score on each hole from each squad is counted. Golden Eagle played to a par 72 (6,745 yards).

The Pokegama team was propelled by Christensen and Rolle's 10-under 62. They had a two ball total of 14-under 130 .

Just one shot behind is the team of Topher Baron, Adam Arola, Wade Walters and Blake Onkka at 131. Arola scored a hole in one on the 198-yard, par 3, 16th hole.

The final round will be completed Tuesday with tee times starting at 8:30 a.m. and the leaders going off at 9:20.
