A man has been arrested in connection with Thursday’s midday shooting that wounded a woman and her 15-month-old child near a south Minneapolis park, police said Friday.

The woman, in her 20s, and the girl, who was in a stroller, each were hit once just after 2 p.m. Thursday near Peavey Park, close to the intersection of Park Avenue S. and Franklin Avenue, police said. The two were taken to Hennepin County Medical Center, where they were listed in stable condition.

Police have said the pair were not the intended targets of the shots.

“Officers and detectives worked the case through the night and probable cause was developed and an arrest of an adult male was made. The investigation is ongoing,” police said in a news release.

Thursday’s shooting followed several fatal shootings in the city in recent days.

“Our community deserves better than the violence that has been seen on our streets lately especially that of an innocent mother and child yesterday,” Police Chief Janeé Harteau said in a statement.

“I am incredibly proud of the swift actions of our responding officers, investigators and members of the new GIT, Gang Interdiction Team, who made such a quick arrest.”
