Carolina captain Justin Williams made sure the Hurricanes rebounded from a "dud" of a loss.

Williams and Micheal Ferland scored in the game's first 30 seconds and the Carolina Hurricanes held on for a 2-1 victory over the New Jersey Devils on Sunday.

The Hurricanes lost 4-1 at home on Saturday night to the Columbus Blue Jackets. Williams didn't mince words after that loss, the team's seventh in nine games.

"It was a dud," Williams said on Saturday. "Just call it what it was. A dud. And certainly unacceptable."

Jordan Staal sprung Williams, who cut between Travis Zajac and Taylor Hall to give Carolina a 1-0 lead just 22 seconds in. Eight seconds later, New Jersey defenseman Damon Severson turned the puck over in the neutral zone and Teuvo Teravainen fed Ferland, who sent a one-timer past New Jersey goalie Cory Schneider) for a 2-0 lead.

Carolina's two-goal outburst in the first half-minute is the fastest in franchise history and tied for fifth fastest in NHL history.

"It never hurts in the NHL to come up with two goals early and make them chase us," Staal said.

The Devils, who lost in overtime at home on Saturday to the Detroit Red Wings, cut the deficit in half when Pavel Zacha flipped a backhander past McElhinney at 6:33 in the first. But New Jersey was 0-for-for 5 on the power play, including three empty chances in the second period.

"I thought after the first 30 seconds, we gathered ourselves and played well," New Jersey coach John Hynes said. "Unfortunately, we couldn't find a way to put the puck in the net."

Vegas 6, Edmonton 3: Jonathan Marchessault had two goals and an assist, leading the Golden Knights past the host Oilers. William Karlsson, Cody Eakin, Max Pacioretty and Reilly Smith also scored, Smith tacked on two assists, and Colin Miller had three. The Golden Knights have won two of their past three to improve to 9-11-1. "We need to build off this," Marchessault said. "We had a tough first 20 games, and everybody knows that. We need to catch up from our slow start.

The Golden Knights scored three goals in a 2:12 span early in the second period. Eakin tied it at 2-2 with a shorthanded goal at 2:21, Pacioretty struck at 3:53, and Marchessault added a power-play goal at 4:33. Vegas added to its lead 34 seconds into the third on a redirect by Marchessault, his 10th, and got another goal by Smith three minutes later.

Colorado 4, Anaheim 3 (OT): Mikko Rantanen's power-play slapshot with 1.3 seconds on the clock in overtime gave the Avalanche a road victory over the slumping Ducks. Nathan MacKinnon scored twice and Rantanen had two assists for the Avalanche, which overcame a 3-1 deficit to hand the Ducks their 12th loss in 15 games. Sven Andrighetto also had a goal for Colorado, and Philipp Grubauer stopped 30 shots. Brandon Montour, Ryan Getzlaf and Ondrej Kase scored for Anaheim. Ryan Miller made 38 saves.

Dallas 6, N.Y. Islanders 2: Esa Lindell scored twice during Dallas' four-goal second period in a victory over the host Islanders. Alexander Radulov had two goals and an assist, Tyler Seguin had a goal and two assists, and Roope Hintz also scored for the Stars. Jamie Benn had three assists and Jason Spezza reached 900 points in his career.
