Manny Machado was 16 when he first met Alex Rodriguez, and they quickly became close friends and offseason workout buddies. So Machado was watching intently Sunday morning as A-Rod announced he was ending his career.

"I'm sure Manny had some emotions," Baltimore Orioles manager Buck Showalter said, "and he certainly took them out on the field with him."

Machado became the second player in major league history to homer in the first, second and third innings, driving in a career-high seven runs in a 10-2 rout of James Shields and the host Chicago White Sox.

"He's a mentor to me," Machado said of Rodriguez. "I've known him for a long time. To see him go up there and talk and leave it there, it's tough."

Machado is the ninth player in big league history to homer in any three consecutive innings.

He grounded into a double play in the fifth, lined to center in the seventh and grounded to third in the ninth, failing to become the first Baltimore player to hit four homers in a game.

New York 3, Cleveland 2: The visiting Indians lost for the fifth time in seven games but maintained their two-game lead in the AL Central. Cleanup hitter Mike Napoli was ejected by plate umpire Lance Barrett after getting called out on strikes in the eighth inning. Napoli screamed and pointed in Barrett's face and might have nicked him with the bill of his helmet.

Texas 5, Houston 3 (11): Ian Desmond hit a tiebreaking single in the 11th inning and the visiting Rangers beat the Astros for the 11th time in 13 meetings this season. Desmond is tied for the major league lead with seven go-ahead RBI in the seventh inning or later this season.

Seattle 3, Los Angeles 1: James Paxton took a four-hitter into the ninth inning for the host Mariners before he was forced from the game after being hit on the left arm by a line drive. Angels star Mike Trout struck out four times on his 25th birthday.

Kansas City 7, Toronto 1: Kendrys Morales hit a grand slam, the third of his career, for the host Royals.

National League

Washington 1, San Francisco 0: Tanner Roark and the Washington bullpen outdueled Madison Bumgarner as the host Nationals beat the Giants. Bumgarner lost despite allowing just two hits. One was Wilson Ramos' 18th home run in the seventh inning.

Cincinnati 7, Pittsburgh 3: Billy Hamilton had three hits, swiped four bases and scored three times for the visiting Reds.

Arizona 9, Milwaukee 3: Jake Lamb hit his 24th homer during a five-run fifth, when the host Diamondbacks tied the single-inning club record for extra-base hits with five.

Philadelphia 6, San Diego 5: The visiting Phillies turned the first triple play in Petco Park history in the seventh inning on a 5-4-3 ground ball.

Atlanta 6, St. Louis 3: The Cardinals dropped to 26-32 at home.

Interleague

L.A. Dodgers 8, Boston 5: Adrian Gonzalez had three hits for the second game in a row and hit his 300th career homer for the host Dodgers, who moved one game behind the NL West-leading Giants.

Chicago Cubs 3, Oakland 1: Kyle Hendricks pitched into the eighth inning for his fifth win since June as the visiting Cubs won their seventh straight. Hendricks lowered his ERA to 2.17.

N.Y. Mets 3, Detroit 1: Neil Walker hit a two-run homer in the top of the ninth as the visiting Mets handed the Tigers just their second loss in 12 games. Anibal Sanchez pitched eight impressive innings for Detroit.
