Unlikely pinch hitter Jon Lester got a two-strike bunt down and drove home Jason Heyward from third in the 12th inning, and the Chicago Cubs overcame a six-run deficit to beat the Seattle Mariners 7-6 on Sunday night at Wrigley Field.
Heyward led off the 12th with a double off Cody Martin and advanced on a fly ball before Lester, a lefthanded pitcher, dropped a bunt down right in front of the plate.
Heyward made it home with a headfirst slide, sparking a frenzied celebration.
Cubs manager Joe Maddon said he used Lester as a pinch hitter "because he can do that." Lester is an .051 career hitter, but this was his 13th sacrifice in his two seasons in the National League.
The Cubs trailed 6-3 before they pushed across three runs in the ninth against Seattle closer Steve Cishek, handing the sidewinding righthander his sixth blown save in 31 chances. Addison Russell hit an RBI single and Wilson Contreras drove in another run when he beat out a potential double-play grounder, before Cishek let the tying run score by throwing a wild pitch with two outs.
