Sure, it's summer, but Nordstrom is looking ahead. The Mall of America department store gave a sneak peek of fall fashions at its Fall Designer Preview, which featured looks from top American and European labels, including Michael Kors, Lanvin, Akris, Chanel and Gucci.
Gregg Andrews, fashion director for Nordstrom, described the looks as pretty and nostalgic.
"There's definitely a femininity story, but not overtly sexy," he said. And while he noted that "designers are still really reflective and embracing past decades," the trends aren't as well defined as they once were. "Women don't want to be dictated to," he said. "They want to use clothes to dictate their personality."
Here are his top trends for fall:
Contemporary classics: Look for wools and other menswear fabrics that are "very classic, but done in a modern way," said Andrews. "Women want things they understand and are wearable, but don't already have in their closet."
'70s sleek: Fashion loves to look back and the 1970s is the decade of choice for fall. "The idea is both retro and minimal," said Andrews. Find the silhouettes of the era in simple and elegant iterations.
Color story: The season belongs to red. "When we get to holiday, color palette will get softer with warm camels and oatmeal," said Andrews. That's a change of pace from black and gray, which have dominated in recent years.
