A day at the beachSwimsuit season is short in Minnesota, so the minute the temp tops 70 degrees, sunbathers flock to Minneapolis' Lake Calhoun. We did some trendspotting on Thomas Beach and, sure enough, we found many of the season's hot looks there, from cutouts to florals to shockingly bright hues.
Big on blues
Lake Calhoun wasn't quite as bright as Cassondra Heckler's true blue Xhilaration swimsuit from Target. Blue -- from light sky to bright turquoise -- is big in beachwear this year.
Jorts
Jean shorts (now known as jorts) are having their day in the sun. Nicole Kendrick looked cool and stylish in jorts from 579, top and sunglasses from Deb and Old Navy shoes.
Cover-ups
A swimsuit coverup doesn't have to be boring. In fact, it doesn't even have to be a coverup. Hannah Schneider wore a $10 dress from Forever 21 over her suit. Her sunglasses are from Forever 21, Merona sandals from Target.
Mix masters
Bikinis and tankinis don't need to be matchy-matchy. Maly Yi took a new polka-dot top from Target and paired it with a black bikini bottom she had at home.
Clever cutouts
Jessica Ashley Nelson showed how creative cutouts can dress up an otherwise plain one-piece swimsuit. She paired her Anne Cole swimsuit from June Resale with shoes from Rewind, sunglasses from Urban Outfitters and a Worthis bag.
