L.L.Bean conjures images of buffalo-plaid shirts, canvas field coats and thick wool sweaters. So when news broke that the outdoor apparel giant was coming to the Mall of America, those who are more comfortable reading Vogue than Field and Stream began to wonder, "What's in it for me?"

A lot, it turns out. More than 5.3 million people follow the brand on Pinterest. Fashion bloggers praise L.L.Bean's Bean boots in their Instagram selfies. Even GQ has paid homage to the century-old boots, calling them "the most storied piece of American rain gear." Ever since edgy designer Alex Carleton took over as creative director in 2009, the brand has continued to adapt and update its style with each new season.
